Water-Based Adhesive vs Solvent Based Adhesive
Aqueous adhesives are water based adhesives formulated using a mixture of high molecular weight polymer emulsions, pigments and curatives in a water based medium. Solvent based adhesives consist of pigments and curatives with dissolved polymers in a solvent solution. While the chemical composition of solvent based and aqueous Chemlok systems is similar, handling requirements differ.
Solvent Based Adhesives:
- Solutions/dispersions
- Not VOC compliant
- 18-28% TSC by weight
- Dilution typically required
- Diluents: MIBK, MEK, Xylene, Toluene
- Film thickness control by viscosity measurement: Zahn or Ford cup
- More forgiving of part contamination
Water-Based Adhesives:
- Emulsions
- All VOC compliant
- 25-50% solids by weight
- Dilution rarely needed
- Diluents: Deionized (DI) water, distilled water
- Film thickness control by density measurement: hydrometer
