Coal dust is the number one cause of fires in mines. Our dust suppression equipment helps to reduce dust, and minimise the risk of explosions underground which are caused when coal dust mixes with methane gas.
Parker Conflow offers a market-leading range of fire suppression systems utilizing proven technology to protect employees and equipment in the event of a fire.
Parker Conflow's range of pressure measurement and control products provides accurate pressure measurement and greater control when incorporated in water and oil systems.
Our innovative range of products allows the accurate measurement and control of water within a mine, which enables greater control of water usage underground.
The Parker Bretby Gammatech range of probes and monitoring equipment analyse the quality of coal and the heat content it is likely to emit.
Our comprehensive range of machine safety systems also protects employees and machinery from unsafe situations. This includes technology that electronically interrupts mining cutting head motors if the minimum water requirements are not met. They also provide a positive safety measure to eliminate accidents in the mine.
The Parker Conflow range of filtration equipment helps to filter out contaminants that could affect safety or machine performance.
The Ash Probe is a portable instrument for measuring the ash content of coal, providing the user with highly accurate readings within seconds. Instantaneous readings can be made of coal quality on stockpiles, trains or trucks, allowing customers to check the quality of incoming coal supplies and specifications against their suppliers’ claims.
Part One
Safety is vital in quarries and cement plants and dust inhalation can be a major problem. Responsible quarries are taking notice of HSE guidance and implementing dust suppression systems to reduce risks associated with Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS). The European guidance document - "Good Practice Guide on Workers’ Health Protection through the Good Handling and use of Crystalline Silica and products containing it", made a significant impact on raising awareness of the issue of RCS and its impact on workers. Does your workplace comply with the exposure limits for RCS? What does it take for a dust reduction programme to be successful?
Part Two
With dust suppression, the aim is to prevent dust escaping from its source, collect it and contain it - this is usually done through spraying mechanisms. Parker Conflow's dust suppression systems use water which is sprayed onto the source of the dust escaping and is usually done at the point of extraction or crushing. This ensures that the respirable sized particles are wetted and entrapped by the water droplets.

Parker Bretby Gammatech systems have been in the field providing customers with information since 1994 and seven years prior to this under British Coal. The method of on-line detection has not changed much over two decades. However, the way we handle data most certainly has. This paper will describe the current suite of Parker Bretby Gammatech equipment for detecting the ash in coal using the Natural Gamma method and what we can now do with this enormous amount of data being collected in terms of getting it to the people who need it in the most suitable format, wherever they may be in the world. Any reporting software will have to be compatible with industry standard operating systems and a client’s own management systems, which gives our engineers an exciting challenge.

Coal mining presents a number of specific hazards, ranging from collapse and flooding to dangerous explosions. Dust created by mining activities presents a hazard because its pervasive nature creates a number of breathing-related issues for people, as well as maintenance issues for machinery. Dust also creates a potentially explosive environment

Traditional coal ash sampling and analysis using a laboratory facility can take a few hours if there is an on site lab or days if the samples are sent away for analysis. Using the Parker Bretby Gammatech portable Ash Probe, the results are available in a few minutes by probing the coal pile with no special training required by the operator.

Probably the most significant trend in the instrumentation products world today is the design of increasingly corrosion-resistant systems. Led by oil and gas companies, instrumentation and piping engineers are now focusing far more attention on the materials used to fabricate valves, manifolds and tubing systems. In the offshore project world, for example, Parker Hannifin is currently seeing exponential growth in the use of 6Mo in preference to traditional 316 stainless steel. So, why are so many choosing that particular material?
