Managing Pressure Inside Electric Vehicle Battery Housings

 

Electric Vehicle (EV) batteries are powerful and complex systems. They can, however, be prone to thermal events or "thermal runaways" - sudden, rapid heating of one or more battery cells due to defects such as mechanical damage, an electrical short circuit, or overload. Such events can cause a rapid rise in pressure inside the battery housing, leading to serious consequences, including complete destruction of the traction battery and even the entire vehicle. Additionally, minor pressure differences between the interior of the housing and the environment can also pose a threat to the battery's integrity and performance.

How CliPHvent Works

In the event of pressure differences between the interior of a housing and the environment, as well as when sudden overpressure occurs inside a housing, CliPHvent ensures controlled pressure compensation or fast battery venting. This is particularly important in case of a thermal event in the traction batteries of electric vehicles.
