Sealing Solutions for Energy Storage Systems - Prädifa Technology Division | Parker

Battery System

Energy storage systems require sealing and shielding elements providing reliable protection against harmful environmental effects. Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to moisture, dirt or dust. Housings, covers, mounts and coolant lines must be sealed to prevent malfunctions, short-circuit faults or flashovers and, in the worst case, a resulting fire.

The utilization of electrically conductive sealing materials prevents a buildup of electric potential in components separated by seals and the risk of electric flashovers it entails.

The sealing elements have to enable easy volume production assembly and maintenance with minimized exertion of force.

Parker Prädifa offers tailored materials and product solutions for:
• Battery housings
• Cooling system connections
• Cable feed-throughs
• Battery mounts
• Battery vents
• Maintenance hatches

Hydrogen Storage Systems

Storage and sealing of hydrogen entails diverse challenges. For instance, the utilization of low-permeation, mechanically robust low-temperature sealing compounds such as Parker Prädifa’s P5009 polyurethane or the B8885 butyl compound is essential to efficient and safe storage.

In addition to the suitable compound selection, Parker Prädifa emphasizes an intelligent seal design and has developed the so-called "L-Seal" specifically for use in hydrogen environments.

Especially during the refueling process, seals are subjected to high pressure gradients. In combination with the aforementioned diffusion tendency of hydrogen, this effect is conducive to seal damage caused by explosive decompression. Concurrently, the sealing compounds have to exhibit mechanical resistance and deliver reliable sealing performance also at extremely low temperatures.

Parker Prädifa offers tailored materials and product solutions for:

  • Tank systems
  • Tank valves
  • Pressure reducers
  • Control/metering valves

Gas Tank Systems

Compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or biogas are used as energy sources for gas-powered vehicles, which has the advantage that the requisite infrastructure and technologies largely exist. Even so, they also pose special challenges.

Parker Prädifa offers seals from various HNBR, FKM, polyurethane or PTFE compounds. In combination with PTFE backup rings, O-rings under high pressure are protected against gap extrusion.

During the refueling process, the high pressure difference between the tank and the pump leads to expansion cold with extremely low temperatures, which may be as low as -80 °C and more. The high pressure in combination with extreme cold requires the utilization of high-performance sealing compounds and backup rings that protect the seals against gap extrusion.

While following the further path of the gas from the tank into the internal combustion engine, additional robust sealing solutions, e.g. in pressure reducers, line couplings, control/metering valves and ultimately in injection valves are necessary.

Parker Prädifa offers tailored materials and product solutions for:

  • Tank systems
  • Tank valves
  • Pressure reducers
  • Control/metering valves
