Sealing Solutions for Energy Converters - Prädifa Technology Division | Parker

Electric Motors

The motors, power electronics and transmissions of electric vehicles are typically combined in a central assembly, the so-called e-axle. Besides advantages relating to driving dynamics such as a low center of gravity of the vehicle, the unit’s exposed position is also directly affected adversely by environmental effects like dirt, moisture and dust. Housings protect the electrical and mechanical components against harmful environmental effects such as the intrusion of moisture. Cooling circuits protect the motors and power electronics against thermal damage. Transmission seals ensure adequate lubrication of the moving components.

Parker Prädifa offers a variety of sealing solutions for system-integrated seals, housings and covers. In addition to standard PIP (Press-in-Place) seals for housings and covers, Parker Prädifa’s integrated sealing solutions offer customers special value. For instance, seals can be directly applied to housings or covers using composite and 2-component or X-component technologies. In addition to seals, the integration of other Parker products such as heat-dissipating materials or electric shielding is possible. Due to functional integration, we reduce development, handling, organizational and assembly requirements for the sealing and shielding components.

Parker Prädifa offers tailored materials and product solutions for

• xC housing (integrated seal, EMIshielding, thermally conductive components)
• Cooling connections
• Drive shafts
• Plug connections

Fuel Cells

The fuel cell is a compact and powerful energy converter that converts chemical energy directly into electric (propulsion) energy by means of cold combustion, for instance on board of vehicles.

Unlike in a battery, the chemical energy is not stored in a fuel cell, but is continuously supplied to it in the form of a fuel (e.g. hydrogen) and an oxidation agent (e.g. air-oxygen). The combustion gases cannot simply be conducted from the tank or the surrounding area into the fuel cell, but must be purified, moistened and condensed to ensure efficient and long-term performance of the fuel cell. Furthermore, it must be assured that in the entire supply and discharge process of the combustion gases and the exhaust gases any contamination by environmental effects or unwanted leakage into the environment are prevented.

Sealing of the individual components of the fuel cell stack and the supply and discharge lines of the fuel cell requires reliable sealing systems. Parker Prädifa offers O-rings and other static seals such as press-in-place seals made from special rubber compounds with long-term stability. They prevent the intrusion of in-leaked air or other environmental media that might severely impair the performance of a fuel cell or even lead to its destruction. By means of Parker Prädifa’s novel, patented Roll2Seal® both installation and reliable sealing of various lines can be achieved in a very simple way.

CNG/LNG, LPG, Biogas Engines

The basic design of gas-powered vehicles is very similar to that of vehicles with gasoline engines. Even so, there are some components with differentiating characteristics such as high-pressure tanks and valves, pressure reducers and low-pressure lines.

Parker Prädifa offers special materials that in terms of media compatibility and temperature resistance are particularly well-suited for use in gas-powered vehicles and available in the form of standard seal geometries such as O-, X-, or rectangular rings, backup rings, rod or piston seals. The portfolio is complemented by sealing solutions tailored to the specific customer requirements.

For refueling valves and high-pressure gas tanks, seal designs are needed that deliver robust and reliable sealing performance specifically in terms of their suitability for low temperatures and pressure stability such as the combination of O-rings in low-temperature grades with PTFE backup rings. Alternatively, the utilization of low-temperature O-rings is possible as well.

In pressure reducers, the high storage pressure level of the natural gas is initially reduced and the gas conducted from the tank to the engine. In injection valves, the natural gas is subsequently introduced into the engine’s combustion chamber.
