Crimper Preventative Maintenance

The spring months can be a good time to take on some of the maintenance issues that you’ve been wrestling with.

This article covers the recommended PM for Karrykrimp and Karrykrimp 2, one of the most common among ParkerStore customers.

Preventative Maintenance

Check hydraulic oil level every 40 hours of operation Remember, always check the oil level with the crimper cylinder in the fully retracted position. If the cylinder is advanced when the pump is filled, the reservoir will be over-filled when retracted. The oil level should be within ½" to 1" below the fill opening. If it is necessary to add oil, use Enerpac oil only. (Note: Vehicle Battery Powered Pump – 12 volt unit uses AW-46 hydraulic oil). Also, keep an eye on your temperature gauge. If the oil temperature rises to 140° F during use, turn off machine and let cool to 120° F before continuing.
Drain and refill the oil reservoir every 1,000 hours of operation.
Check the crimp bowl weekly for signs of wear.
Clean the crimp bowl of old grease on a weekly basis. Re-grease the crimp bowl after the bowl has been cleaned.
Apply approved lithium grease to the dies and crimp bowl each time the dies are changed. If dies are not changed through a day’s operation, grease should be applied at least twice a day.

Crimp Diameter Troubleshooting Guide

Correctly measure your crimp diameter On standard Parkrimp Series fittings, measure the crimp diameter on the flat surfaces in the middle of the crimped shell. For 26 Series fittings, measure the crimp diameter on the flat of the last groove on the barrel crimp closest to the hose.
In General, if a fitting is crimping above (larger than) specification, i.e., the spec calls for .955 crimp diameter and the actual measured diameter is .975, then the crimper bowl and/or dies are worn. If a fitting is crimping below (smaller than) specification (and you are using a brand new die), i.e. the spec calls for a .955 crimp diameter and the actual measured diameter is .935, there is a good chance that the new die is out of specification.

Hose Assembly Do's and Don'ts

Just make it fit. We’ve all been tempted. We get rushed, we feel pressured, we cut a hose too short…but the end result of “making it fit” is always the same, and can be summed up in two words: poor workmanship.

In general, if a job looks bad, it probably is bad. Even if it meets the technical goal of the installation, the aesthetics of the job still affect an observer’s perception of your skills.

When making or installing a hose assembly...

Never use a component that appears to be dirty, cracked, blistered, kinked, or non-conformant in any other regard.
Never assemble a Parker fitting on another manufacturer’s hose, or a Parker hose on another manufacturer’s fitting
Never crimp or swage a Parker hose or fitting with anything except the listed swage or crimping machine and dies.
Never crimp or swage another manufacturer’s hose or fitting with a Parker crimp or swage dies.
Never use a Parker fitting with anything other than its compatible mated parts in accordance with Parker written instructions.
Never re-use a field-attachable fitting that has blown off or pulled off a hose.
Never re-use a Parker permanent fitting (whether crimped or swaged) or any part thereof.
Never assemble Parker fittings to any hose that was previously used in service when the hose was the cause of the original failure.
Never use a section of hose that has been kinked during unpacking or installation.
Never install a hose in such a way that it will be stretched, twisted, or in any other way re-oriented from its natural lay during use.
Never apply a twisting or torquing action to a hose when tightening fittings, or allow twisting or torquing to occur during installation or when the assembly is in use.
Never allow tensile loads, side loads, kinking, flattening, abrasion, thread damage, or sealing surface damage to impede the proper installation and use of a Parker hose assembly.
Never complete an installation without eliminating all air entrapment and pressurizing the system to a pressure equal to or less than the maximum working pressure of the assembly’s weakest link.
Never forget that fluids coming into contact with hot surfaces, open flames, or sparks could ignite an explosion.

Now that you know what not to do, ask yourself the following:

Have you left sufficient slack?
Are there any twists in the hose?
Are any hoses rubbing against each other or against other components?
Have you allowed for system vibration?
Is the hose protected against kinking?
Is the hose protected against heat, sparks, or open flames?
Is the hose protected against abrasion or chafing?
